TECHTALK: GOING TO AFRICA - WHAT'S IN MY BAG?

Next week I’m flying with director Svensson to Africa to shoot a commercial / documentary. Unfortunately I can not tell you what it’s for or what it’s about, but nonetheless I’d like to share what’s going to be in my bag.

I will shot on a Canon 5D Mark 2 with mainly a Canon 24-105 f4 lens. All the Canon gear will be provided by the production company, but I’ll take my own Nikon D7000 with me as a backup and stills camera. Lenswise I’ll have the Nikon 18-70mm and 35mm f1.8 with me. Both great lenses that do not cost to much if anything happens. Furthermore they are quite light weight.

In the back you can see the my shoulder rig. It’s a combination of many parts. The mainpart is based on a Ginirig, which I can highly recommend. It’s a chinese knockoff product, but it’s all aluminum and the build quality is incredible. The shoulder pad is the so called “cheapo shouldermount”. It’s the one you can get on Amazon or Ebay for about 40€. The quickrelease-plate is from Manfroto. And the articulating arm is for the DP-4.

The Small-HD DP4 is my EVF of choice. I only have been able to use it once yet. The build quality and the features are nearly perfect. But because of the good build quality it’s also a little heavy. We’ll see how it will work out. I’ll post a longterm review after this job in Africa.

To record sound I’m using a Zoom H1 connected to a Rode Videomic Pro or the Sennheiser Shotgunmic, which you can see on the picture. The Zoom H1 is connected to the mic port of the 5D MK2 with a Whirlwind Line to Mic cable. I chose the H1 over the H4N for two reasons: weight and price. The whole rig is quite heavy already and when carrying it for a whole day every gramm is going to count. And with a price of 99€ with almost the same soundquality (at least to my ears) of the H4N, I just couldn’t say no.

Furthermore I’m using a LCW Fader ND 77mm with a bunch of step-up rings and a rubberlens-hood. The Fader ND has a 77mm filterthread, but a 82mm filterthread on the outside. That’s why you can’t use the original lens-hood. So the Fader ND goes into the rubberlens-hood, and the lens hood on the lens or on one of the step-up rings. Got this tip from DSLR Video Shooter Caleb Pike. Thanks for that.

A Macbook Pro for downloading all the files and previewing in the basecamp, and an Ipad for quicknotes on set or using as a slate with the app “DSLR Slate”. A bunch of Sandisk SD and CF cards, a rocketblower, a pair of headphones and some more equipment which isn’t shown here are all packed into the Thinktank Streetwalker Harddrive.

I’ll post a couple of updates as soon as I’m on the road, so stay tuned.
